Welcome to our MUD game development blog
Reader, welcome. Because you are here, I assume you are a devotee of the niche game genre of MUDs. You are not alone.
This blog is dedicated to musing about the game development of MUDs, specifically MUDs that lean more towards an action-RPG style of game-play and less on roleplaying with other users. These can overlap, of course, and we encourage players to deeply immerse themselves in their characters.
This is written from our perspective, with all of our genre and game-play biases. You may not agree and that’s OK.
MUDs were one of the first multiplayer games available online, especially within a fantasy/RPG setting, and set the stage for other games in the decades to come.
That said, the MUDs of today were largely created decades ago using the game design principles prevalent then; the majority of them play like the DOS games of the ’80s and ’90s, which many MUD players have nostalgia for.
But video games have leapt forward since then, not only in terms of graphics, but also in understanding of how games can engage with players.
This blog purports to unravel, to the best of my understanding, what makes MUDs enjoyable and where it makes sense to apply some ‘modern’ game design techniques to make them even better.
